Pune, March 10, 2025 – A disturbing incident occurred in Pune on March 8, when a man stepped out of his BMW car and urinated on a public road. This took place in the morning near Shastrinagar, Yerawada, and was recorded on video. The clip spread quickly online, making people very angry.

The man, Gaurav Ahuja, aged 25, stopped his car at a busy traffic point. He got out, urinated near a divider, and ignored people around him. His friend, Bhagyesh Oswal, 22, sat inside the car with a beer bottle. When someone challenged Ahuja, he made rude gestures and drove away.

The video reached many people on X, and the public demanded action. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde responded, saying, “Such behaviour is unacceptable, and we will take strict steps.” Soon after, Ahuja posted an apology video. He said, “I made a mistake, please forgive me. Don’t trouble my family.” He promised to surrender to the police within eight hours and did so in Karad, Satara, that night. Oswal was arrested earlier from his home.

Pune police filed cases against both men under several laws, including public nuisance and dangerous driving. They suspect Ahuja and Oswal were drunk, and tests are being done to confirm this. On March 9, a Pune court ordered them to stay in police custody until March 10 for further investigation.

The BMW was later found at a petrol pump in Kolhapur, but its number plates were missing. Police believe this was done to hide evidence. They also found a whisky bottle, a plastic glass, and a toll receipt inside the car, adding to the charges.

Reports say Ahuja has a history of trouble. Activist Vijay Kumbhar noted that Ahuja was arrested in 2021 for illegal cricket betting. Many now call him a repeat offender who avoids punishment due to wealth. This has led to calls for stronger action.

The incident has started discussions in Pune about proper behaviour, misuse of money, and the role of police. Citizens hope this case will bring justice, showing that no one is above the law, regardless of status.

   The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) includes provisions that address public nuisances, including acts like public urination. Section 290 of the BNS penalizes such offenses with fines or imprisonment of up to three months. This provision highlights the importance of maintaining public order and hygiene, which is essential for the well-being of all citizens in urban spaces.
2. Section 294 of the BNS - Obscene Acts in Public:
   In addition to Section 290, Section 294 of the BNS criminalizes obscene acts in public places. Public urination, often deemed an indecent and disruptive act, can fall under this section, potentially leading to further legal consequences. The penalties can include imprisonment for up to three months or a fine, or both.
3. Local Municipal Laws and Hygiene Regulations:
   Apart from national laws, local municipal regulations also play an important role in maintaining public hygiene. In Pune, public urination is prohibited under municipal rules. Offenders can be fined or even detained by local authorities. The lack of sufficient public restroom facilities in certain parts of the city is also a key factor contributing to such behavior, though it doesn’t excuse it.
